Scottish seascape painting work in progress with Indanthrene Blue and Yellow Ochre

Photo of a Scottish seascape painting work in progress with indanthrene blue and yellow ochre

I have started with the deep mixes of acrylic paint colours, Yellow Ochre and Indanthrene Blue, for shadows and darker areas of this Scottish seascape painting on a yellow ochre background.

The Yellow Ochre background is a mid-tone, so it felt good to paint some darker colours first on the rocky landscape. It might not be clear from the photo, but three shades of dark green appear as those simple blunt brushstrokes. Each brushstroke was painted with a small to medium-sized flat-headed brush.

Next, for this Scottish seascape, I may paint some mid-tone colour variations across the whole painting, including the sky and sea.

Gradually, this acrylic seascape painting will use a limited colour palette of:

  • Indanthrene Blue
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Titanium White.

I look forward to introducing the other colours in this limited palette.

I was going to start the other painting on the pale background of Yellow Ochre mixed with Titanium White on the same day. However, by the time I started the first painting the natural light was already fading fast. My studio lights are currently more suitable for computer work than painting in colour.
