More depth of colour added to a Scottish seascape watercolour painting study

Photo showing more depth of colour added to a Scottish seascape watercolour painting study

As I gradually learn more about watercolours and watercolour techniques, I am starting to add more layers of colour and create more depth of colour in my watercolour paintings.

Here is a comparison of the previous version with the current version of this watercolour study. I am enjoying noticing how the lightest colours appear even brighter in the current version, which now has more depth of colour. The wide range of tones and colours makes the painting feel even more intriguing than the flatter, sparser colour range.

Before and after of a Scottish seascape watercolour painting study

Note the subtle changes in tone in the sky are actually due to the photos of the painting taken at different times of day under slightly different outdoor light conditions.

I will return to this painting again, as I feel there could be more I could add to improve the way I treat the difference between the close and distant parts of the landscape in this seascape painting.
